Obama Calls For Criminal Charges Against Ayers Ad Organization
5 days ago, August 21st, lawyers representing Barack Obama filed a request with the Department of Justice to investigate the American Issues Project, a non-profit 501(c)4 organization running an attack ad against Obama claiming Obama” launched his political career from the living room of Bill Ayers,” a former terrorist with Weather Underground. If Obama did anything in Ayers living room, it was likely crawl around on the floor, as he was only 8 years old at the time. He was 6 years old at the time of the Weather Underground’s bombings.
That, however, is not the bone of contention between the American Issues Project and the Obama campaign; the American Issues Project is acting in blatant disregard for the rules which safeguard their non-profit status. A 501(c)4 is a social welfare organization, which can act in a political function if it advocates for a social welfare issue. This means it may partake in “education” or advertising which educates about a social welfare issue or they may spend a certain minority percentage of their funds towards lobbying for social welfare legislation. There is clear language, however, that forbids them from, “direct or indirect participation or intervention in political campaigns on behalf of or in opposition to any candidate for public office,” according to the Internal Revenue Code. The Obama/Ayers ad is a clear violation against that rule and is part of the point the Obama camp is trying to make to the DOJ.
