The end of the post-Cold War era

Russia has ceased bombing and attacking Georgia, yet Georgia insists the fighting continues (per US instructions). The US was surprised by the swiftness of Russia's counterattack, but is not about to end the hostilties. The State Dept has called for all US citizens to leave Georgia. Round two coming up....

The United States is carefully cultivating an opinion in Western capitals that Russia is "bullying" Georgia. This will strengthen Washington's case for inducting Georgia into the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, which will in turn facilitate the deployment of the US missile defense system onto Russia's border. If Moscow remains passive, the Caucasus could become its "bleeding wound".

The end of the post-Cold War era

Ambassador M K Bhadrakumar was a career diplomat in the Indian Foreign Service.

On a day that China showed its firepower and set new frontiers for global razzmatazz, with about 80 world leaders watching and cheering, the opening ceremony of the Beijing Summer Olympic Games should have been Friday's lead news story. But events in the Caucasus dictated otherwise.

... the Bush administration cannot afford to fail in this Caucasian venture. It will be seen as needlessly having blood on its hands unless US diplomacy successfully turns the tide in its favor and takes matters to their cold, logical conclusion - induction of Georgia into NATO.
