WASHINGTON (AFP)--Georgia shares partial blame for the outbreak of fighting between Georgian and Russian forces in its rebel South Ossetia region, a senior U.S. State Department official said Saturday.
'Does Georgia bear some responsibility? Of course it does. Without question,' the official said to a reporter's question.
'Throughout this whole period we have forcefully or vigorously pressed the Georgian government to be measured and to avoid at all costs ... any military conflict with Russian forces, and to avoid any escalation. So we have been quite clear,' said the official, requesting anonymity.
