The government on Sunday morning approved the first reading of a bill that would create a central database containing every Israeli citizen's fingerprints and photograph.
The Interior Ministry formulated the "ID, travel document and biometric information data base" law, after it had been given the task of creating a database that would contain the pictures and fingerprints.
Prime Minister Ehud Olmert said the law would implement an "unprecedented revolution" in order to combat counterfeiting and improve the service provided to citizens by governmental bodies. He made the comments at the start of the weekly Cabinet meeting.
