RIA NOVOSTI: NATO Black Sea fleet build up Coordinated in advance to coincide with Georgian attack. The source also told RIA Novosti that the operation was coordinated with NATO’s plans to strengthen its naval presence in the Black Sea. |
“The statements of some NATO representatives that the maneuvers of the alliance’s ships in the Black Sea were planned a year ago are evidence that attacks on South Ossetia and Abkhazia were planned earlier, maybe even last year,” the source said.

A wind-shredded American flag still hangs on the front of a home on 4th Street in Chalmette -- one Arnold Crabtree has struggled to rebuild.
Crabtree was deployed for a year of duty in Afghanistan a couple months ago, but in the time since he's been gone, the soldier says FEMA came by and took the trailer he had been living in.
Friend and neighbor Kathy Hernandez says Crabtree was shocked when she delivered the news.
"Just freaked out...freaked out, worried," Hernandez said. "He had his sergeant contact FEMA to secure the trailer being there when he arrives home in a year, so you know, he thought he had taken care of everything he needed to before he left."

Plutocrat Lesson No. 4–How to Wrap Gifts in Dollar Bills
If you want to be a successful plutocrat, you have to perfect the art of the hostess gift.
Edwina Rogers, the wife of Washington lobbyist Ed Rogers, is a master of the form and has developed her own signature specialty. She wraps her thank-yous in sheets of real dollar bills, purchased from the Bureau of Engraving.
In this clip from the pilot episode of “PowerHouse”–a kind of “Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous” show set in Washington and in development for NBC–Mrs. Rogers is shown in her “wrapping room,” a special area of her walk-in closet in her 18,000-square-foot mansion.
She unfurls a roll of dollar bills and starts slicing them up to make the appropriate wrapping sheets. No matter that she slices several dollar bills in half–it is all about lining up the George Washingtons on the front.
“The effect is fabulous, especially for foreigners,” she says. “They love it.”

Madonna courts controversy again over McCain video
Tue Aug 26, 7:16 PM
By Alex Dobuzinskis
LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Madonna has always reveled in controversy and with the recent launch of her concert tour, "Sticky & Sweet," the 50-year-old pop star has kicked up a new fuss by comparing John McCain to Adolf Hitler in a video.
The dust-up is the latest in a career of risky moves that have paid off handsomely for Madonna, whose tours and albums have long mixed music with politics, sex and religion. While other stars rose to fame in the 1980s then faded away, "Material Girl" Madonna has become a global star and even courted controversy to stay relevant to younger audiences.
"Madonna seems to be an extraordinarily brilliant business woman in the business of culture," said Robert Thompson, a professor of media at and pop culture at Syracuse University.

Remarks delivered by Rep. Dennis Kucinich of Ohio at the Democratic National Convention on Tuesday:
It's Election Day 2008. We Democrats are giving America a wake-up call. Wake up, America. In 2001, the oil companies, the war contractors and the neocon artists seized the economy and have added 4 trillion dollars of unproductive spending to the national debt. We now pay four times more for defense, three times more for gasoline and home heating oil and twice what we paid for health care.
Millions of Americans have lost their jobs, their homes, their health care, their pensions. Trillions of dollars for an unnecessary war paid with borrowed money. Tens of billions of dollars in cash and weapons disappeared into thin air, at the cost of the lives of our troops and innocent Iraqis, while all the president's oilmen are maneuvering to grab Iraq's oil.

A trio of journalists who have a track record of documenting police abuse at political conventions were stopped and searched during the early morning hours in Minneapolis. Police took their video equipment, cell phones, hard drive and notes about protests planned for next week's Republican National Convention.
No charges have been filed against the three, according to Mineapolis police spokesman Sgt. William Palmer.

A calm political protest quickly turned chaotic as anxious Denver police surrounded protestors peacefully marching toward the Democratic National Convention Center. After trapping the crowd between two buildings, hundreds of officers used pepper spray, batons and unwarranted aggression. After being surrounded for 20 minutes, two ANP producers managed to escape after recording the whole affair.
Cindy Sheehan and hundreds of anti-war protesters congregated at the Democratic National Convention Sunday in Denver, in a rally organized by the group Recreate 68.
During DNC coverage, MSNBC's Joe Scarborough was waxing ebullient over the gains made by McCain, when Keith Olberman muttered "Jesus, Joe, why don't you get a shovel?" It was likely an open mic problem, but at least Olbermann owned up to it and defended saying it as you'll see.
