Washington — Presidential historians and convention observers believe this year’s Democratic convention will be the first time that a rabbi gives an invocation before the presidential nominee’s acceptance speech since the advent of modern American political conventions nearly a century ago.
Rabbi David Saperstein, director of the Religious Action Center of Reform Judaism, will be making history August 28 as he opens the Democratic convention’s last day, in front of an expected crowd of 70,000 in the audience and millions more watching from afar.
The choice of a Jewish religious leader to give the prime-time invocation is only one part of a move by the Democratic Party to raise the profile of faith in its rhetoric and activities, a move from which Jewish religious activists and evangelical Christians seem to be benefiting more than other faiths. Both groups are seen as key constituencies for the Democrats in the November elections

Are all means to prevent a Jewish man from marrying a gentile considered kosher?
According to a ruling by Rabbi Zalman Melamed, head of the Beit El Yeshiva and one of the most prominent rabbis in the Religious Zionist movement, the answer is yes.
Thus, the Halacha (Jewish law) even permits a person to go to the Interior Ministry and report a case in order to prevent a fictive conversion.

Stamford Hill, London - Rabbi Nochum Rosenberg of Brooklyn, New York, and a controversial figure in its Williamsburg-neighborhood Chasidic community, was physically accosted this evening by dozens of angry Chasidim in London’s Stamford Hill, after he visited today that community to assist in a private matter.
Seeing a hostile situation about to erupt out of control, Rabbi Rosenberg managed to flee to a passing police car, which carried him away to safety. He is currently being held under protection of the Met, London’s police force, until his departure and return to the U.S.
Rabbi Rosenberg is well-known for helping establish mikvaos all over the world over the past 20 years. His notoriety has spiked in recent months, however, due to his newly-adopted personal crusade against an internal communal problem which he claims goes ignored and untreated in the Orthodox community: molestation of children.

Commenting on the Israeli demolition of a five story home in East Jerusalem’s Beit Hanina which rendered another 70 Palestinians homeless, Rabbi Meir Hirsh, a leading rabbinical figure within the Jerusalem ultra - Orthodox community, of Neturei Karta Palestine, issued the following statement:

The United Jewish Communities, the federations of North America (UJC) sent a letter to Prime Minister Ehud Olmert in which they request his personal involvement in finding a solution for the current conversion crisis.
The letter, signed by Chairman of the UJC’s Board of Trustees, Joseph Kanfer and President Howard M. Rieger was sent in light of the Rabbinic Court’s announcement that it intends on disqualifying thousands of conversions of people from the former Soviet Union which were carried out under Rabbi Chaim Drukman.
Drukman is the head of a special conversion campaign whose goal is to accelerate and simplify the conversion process.

These "Kosher Klowns" are members of the Jewish cult called "Lubavitch," which has spread all over the U.S. Do a Google search on this sect and you'll get 770,000 hits, with links to Lubavitch web pages sprinkled around the country.
They base their religious study on occultism, using the Kabbalah to change letters into numbers and by doing so, allegedly gain some type of mystical understanding of their texts.
What part of their religious studies told them to cheat, lie, oppress and steal?
And is that part of their religion or their genetic makeup?

Advertisments have appeared recently in a Guatemalan newspaper for men to work at a meat packing plant in Postville, IA. The only meat packing plant in Postville, is the Agriprocessor plant, the object of a raid by Immigrations and Customs Enforcement (ICE) on May 12. This is not the first time Guatemalan workers have been recruited to work in Postville, and when a worker comes to Iowa he does so at considerable cost.
Since most undocumented workers do not have visas for employment in the United States they pay a “coyote,” a human trafficker, to bring them into the country. Usually, the coyote charges the worker $4,000 - $5,000. The fact that the worker doesn’t have all the money to pay the coyote hardly matters. The coyote knows which village the worker comes from and the relatives of the worker. The coyote knows he will collect the money, one way or another.
If he comes to this country with his wife, the price is double. If he comes with his wife and a child, the price is triple (no discounts).
The worker then travels quietly from the US border to Postville, possibly with the help of a pre-arranged “temp” agency or recruiter, again at a cost.
When the potential worker arrives in Postville he is often directed by current employees to talk to a supervisor at Agriprocessors who can guarantee employment ... but at a price. The supervisor demands that the new recruit purchase a used car from him, usually for an absurd amount. The most common price for such a vehicle I heard from workers I interviewed was $3,500. Workers might complain that they have no money to buy a car. It doesn’t matter. The supervisor tells workers they can pay a small amount each week until the debt is paid. I interviewed a 15 year old undocumented worker, two weeks ago who had been in Postville for six months. He didn’t know how to drive when he “bought” a car (he does now). He doesn’t have a driver’s license and doesn’t have auto insurance.
Once the car is paid for the worker is often forced to buy another car. This time to ensure he keeps his job.
The worker needs to buy fake credentials to show the employer in order to get a job. If he doesn’t have credentials, there are those associated with the plant that know where they can be obtained --- again, at a price. Even workers with valid papers are often told they need to purchase fake ones.

"All of the Palestinians must be killed; men, women, infants, and even their beasts." This was the religious opinion issued one week ago by Rabbi Yisrael Rosen, director of the Tsomet Institute, a long-established religious institute attended by students and soldiers in the Israeli settlements of the West Bank. In an article published by numerous religious Israeli newspapers two weeks ago and run by the liberal Haaretz on 26 March, Rosen asserted that there is evidence in the Torah to justify this stand. Rosen, an authority able to issue religious opinions for Jews, wrote that Palestinians are like the nation of Amalekites that attacked the Israelite tribes on their way to Jerusalem after they had fled from Egypt under the leadership of Moses. He wrote that the Lord sent down in the Torah a ruling that allowed the Jews to kill the Amalekites, and that this ruling is known in Jewish jurisprudence.
Rosen's article, which created a lot of noise in Israel, included the text of the ruling in the Torah: "Annihilate the Amalekites from the beginning to the end. Kill them and wrest them from their possessions. Show them no mercy. Kill continuously, one after the other. Leave no child, plant, or tree. Kill their beasts, from camels to donkeys." Rosen adds that the Amalekites are not a particular race or religion, but rather all those who hate the Jews for religious or national motives. Rosen goes as far as saying that the "Amalekites will remain as long as there are Jews. In every age Amalekites will surface from other races to attack the Jews, and thus the war against them must be global." He urges application of the "Amalekites ruling" and says that the Jews must undertake to implement it in all eras because it is a "divine commandment".

Detroit, May 12 (UPI): Hundreds of Federal agents and police descended on a vaudeville props factory in the Detroit suburb today and arrested scores of undocumented workers. The raid comes after weeks of investigation, some of it undercover, in the factory. Police have also uncovered a meth lab and allegations of sex slavery in the bowels of the facility.
The Irving Moskowitz Rubber Chicken & Whoopie Cushion Supply Company has been in the crosshairs of Homeland Security and other agencies for months. The raid came as no surprise to immigrations experts but the little town of Abalone, Michigan has been thrown into turmoil. The factory provides jobs for about 40% of the population. The factory is largely run by Muslim imams and Catholic priests who belong to an organization known as the North American Meth Boy Love Association (NAMBLA). NAMBLA and the plant have been in operation for about 20 years.
"American culture is partly rooted in the rubber chicken, the whoopie cushion and the joy buzzer," said Avram O'Malley, the plant's general manager, "This raid is nothing more than an anti-Islamic and anti-Christian display by the Federal government. I thought this was America, not Russia."

Thanks to the terrific group, Jews for Racial and Economic Justice (JFREJ) for alerting me to the kosher meat boycott currently roiling parts of the Jewish community coast to coast. It turns out that AgriProcessors, the country's largest kosher slaughterhouse, seems to be guilty of some ugly union busting and targeting of immigrants that has outraged at least a portion of the Orthodox community. The allegations against the company -- which produces sixty percent of the beef and forty percent of the chicken provided to the kosher marketplace -- include a pattern of knowingly exploiting undocumented workers with sub-standard pay and severe workplace mistreatment; violation of child labor laws by putting children as young as 13 to work and reports of floor supervisors physically, verbally and sexually abusing workers.

Lawmakers: Did Postville raid stymie labor probe?

Washington, D.C. — Leaders of a congressional committee are pressing the U.S. Department of Labor for answers on whether an ongoing investigation of child- labor and wage violations at a meatpacking plant in Postville, Ia., will be compromised by a May 12 immigration raid there.
Democratic leaders of the House Education and Labor Committee wrote to Labor Secretary Elaine Chao on May 16. They're asking for more information on the complaints that prompted the Agriprocessors Inc. investigation. They also want to know whether federal labor officials had any involvement with the raid, which was conducted by Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents.

The Islamic-Christian Front for Defending Jerusalem and its Holy Sites, stated on Monday that Israel is using the current scandals Olmert is facing as a cover-up for its continued illegal attacks against the occupied city of Jerusalem.
Dr. Hasan Khater, secretary-general of the Front, stated that Israel started the construction of 1420 housing units for Israeli settlers in a number of illegal settlements around the city, including the settlements of Har Homa (Jabal Abu Ghneim), Pisgat Zeev, and Bitar Elit.
He added that the Israeli Housing Ministry is targeting what is left of the Palestinian lands in the city and around it in order to build Jewish-only settlements.
Dr. Khater also said that Israel is expected to escalate its illegal settlements activities in the coming period as fundamental groups that support and encourage settlement construction and expansion are using the current scandal crisis which Israel’s Prime Minister, Ehud Olmert, is facing.

East Jerusalem Arabs detail violence they face by city's Jews

Last month's attack by a Jewish mob on Arab youths got ample press, but shouldn't be considered an isolated incident.
In fact, Arab residents of Jerusalem, particularly taxi drivers, detail a pattern of racially-motivated violent acts by religious Jews.
The drivers from East Jerusalem call the western part of the city the "Wild West." This week, prominent rabbis circulated Halakhic rulings online, calling for the city's Jews to carry out violent acts against Arab residents.

Israeli airport security checks are known for their thoroughness. Answering questions such as, "Did you pack these bags yourself?" or "Did anyone give you anything to carry?" is par for the course.
But a recent VIP traveler was not prepared when an El Al Israel Airways security officer began asking personal questions in full view and earshot of other passengers - questions that seemed to have nothing to do with security.

These Hasidic moved into Postville around 1988. In the mid-90's, the scourge of crystal meth started to hit the MidWest.Coinicidence?
Bloom does his best to be fair to the Hasidim as he explores their hermetically sealed world. He notes his relief at the familiar speech rhythms, the questions upon questions. He accepts an invitation for a Shabbat stay with a Hasidic family, revels in the food, and prays with his hosts on command. But finally, Bloom is a liberal, not a fundamentalist: He's repelled by their intolerance, their insularity, their open delight in cheating "the goyim," and their manipulative arguments. He quotes one Hasid as saying proudly: "I am a racist... . Why haven't the Jews been extinguished after scores of attempts throughout history? That we are still here defies logic. There is only one answer. We are better and smarter. That's why!" Bloom's heart is with the Postville local who says: "It's not such a great religion if they don't want to be a part of the community, is it?"
More disturbing to Bloom was that the Lubavitchers were dishonorable in their business dealings. They'd buy something and not pay for it or pay or withhold payment for a long time.
"I get bills and throw them away," one bragged to him. "The more bills I get, the faster I throw them away. If they want to get paid that badly, they'll send me another notice and then another. When I'm ready to pay them, I pay them."

Agriprocessors: A Blight on the Land
The Bureau of Immigration and Customs Enforcement detained 390 illegal immigrants May 13, 2008 in the largest single-site immigration raid in US history. The raid took place at Agriprocessors, Inc., the nation’s largest kosher meatpacking plant, located in the tiny town of Postville, Iowa.
Federal officials have declined to comment about possible charges against the owners of Agriprocessors, and jaded Americans can be forgiven for assuming the employer will receive a slap on the wrist, if it receives any penalty at all.
But before you shrug and move on, it’s worth noting that the feds aren’t following the typical routine around the Postville raid. There may yet be some arrests in the offing higher up the ladder, with serious felony charges to follow.
There should be, anyway. The 390 detainees who were working in Agriprocessors’ slaughterhouse are the vanilla surface of a much darker story underneath—a deeply troubling story that demands the owners of Agriprocessors, among others, be prosecuted under the full weight of the law.
If this story doesn’t end with significant prison sentences handed down, there is, as they say, no justice.

Tony Judt has never fought shy of questioning long-cherished ideas. Postwar, his panoramic study of Europe after 1945, was loudly acclaimed in part because it dealt so bracingly with the lies and cover-ups on which the rebuilding of the continent depended - the number of Nazis and collaborators who retained positions of power, for instance, and the myths surrounding wartime resistance. Detail after striking detail documented how nations are never honest about their pasts, and how quickly inconvenient truths are buried.
Judt, who teaches at New York University, is known as a combative writer and reviewer, and this reputation is confirmed by his new collection of pieces, Reappraisals: Reflections on the Forgotten Twentieth Century, which opens with the trouncing of a recent biographer of Koestler for being, among other things, priggishly obsessed with his subject's sex life. Over the years, Judt has been notable, in particular, for his acid dismissals of "romantic" communists and their fellow travellers. Many of his targets have been French intellectuals - he has ripped into Sartre numerous times - but in Reappraisals he also, from his own position on the left, accuses Eric Hobsbawm of being a "mandarin" and calls the much loved EP Thompson a "sanctimonious, priggish Little Englander".
Since September 2001, however, Judt's articulate polemicism has taken a new direction - one that has transformed his life. Uneasy about the political reaction to 9/11 in the US, he soon began to publish a series of condemnations of Bush's international policies. But whereas his anti-communism sat comfortably with mainstream liberal opinion in America, his early opposition to the Iraq war threw him out of alignment with his usual allies, who were still rallying around the president following the terrorist attacks. Judt, who was born and has spent most of his life in Britain, began to feel more aware of being European - and different.
