Violence engulfs Swat as truce collapses

Saturday, July 26, 2008

By our correspondent

MINGORA: As the peace accord between the NWFP government and the Swat Taliban has virtually become ineffective, violence in the militancy-shattered Swat Valley is spiralling with each passing day.

Friday witnessed several incidents of violence when some unknown miscreants bombed another government girls’ high school in Tutano Banda area of Kabal, a cloth market in Charbagh and a barbershop in Golibagh.

Meanwhile, the security forces arrested 10 suspected militants during a search operation in Sherpalam area of Kabal. Sources told The News that the eight-room building of the girls’ high school in Tutano Banda completely caved in after the blast. The perpetrators – as usual – could not be arrested.

According to Israeli officials cited by Ha’aretz, Israel did:

‘The mortar shells were fired [on Monday] by Hamas, although the group did not publicly take responsibility for the attack, which caused no injuries.

Israeli officials said the mortar fire appears to be a Hamas reaction to the wounding of a Palestinian civilian in northern Gaza on Monday, in a bid to show that Hamas will not stand by as Israel harms Palestinian civilians. The civilian, 68, appears to have been hurt by an errant IDF bullet.’ (hat tip)

Ma’an News describes this incident in more detail here:

‘A 67 year-old man was shot and injured by Israeli forces in the north of the Gaza Strip on Monday afternoon.

Local sources told Ma’an that Jamil Abdel Rahman Al-Ghoul was shot while he was in his garden which is 350 meters from the eastern border of the Gaza Strip. The Israeli army opened fire on, injuring him in the shoulder and neck.

One of his relatives, Abu Ziad Al-Ghoul, said that the man was seriously injured and was taken to Kamal Adwan Hospital in the north of the sector.’

Such Israeli actions are a provocation to undermine the ceasefire in Gaza. How can a ceasefire remain in place when Israel conducts so many menacing operations in the West Bank, kidnapping, wounding and killing Palestinian civilians? Hamas' demand that the ceasefire also apply to the West Bank was very sensible, yet one didn't hear the Palestinian Authority collaborators making a similar demand. The partial ceasefire applying to Gaza can't possibly work, but then what else can one expect from the Israelis?

Slater Slams 'Times' for Imbalanced Coverage of Breaches in Truce

Jerome Slater, the scholar of press coverage of Israel in the Times and in Haaretz, had an incisive take on the Times coverage of breaches in the fragile truce between Hamas and Israel:

"The Times may be a-changing, but not that much.  Last Thursday a truce
between Israel and the Palestinians went into effect in Gaza.  On
Tuesday morning, the Israelis broke the truce, sending a hit team to
kill two Islamic Jihad militants.  Later that day, Islamic Jihad
retaliated, feebly, by firing several rockets into Israel, with little
effect.

Here's how the Times played the story, entitled: "Rockets Hit
Israel, Breaking Hamas Truce":

UN records 7 incidents of IDF soldiers attempting to drive Palestinian farmers away from border fence by shooting at them. Only one offence marked against Palestinians for firing on Sderot; report does not include most recent rocket fire

Since it went into effect last week, at least eight violations of the new ceasefire agreement with Hamas and the Palestinian factions have been recorded, a UN source told Ynet on Thursday. According to the source, seven violations were committed by the IDF, while the Palestinians are responsible for just one.

However the UN report does not include the Qassam fire launched towards the Negev during the day. "It is important that both sides honor the ceasefire, in order for it to be the first constructive step towards a wider and more extensive peace process between the sides," the source said.

Most of the offences committed by the IDF include shots fired by soldiers at Palestinian farmers attempting to reach their land near the border security fence. According to the UN, on June 20 an IDF patrol shot at Palestinian farmers near the fence east of Rafah. The soldiers fired for ten minutes in order to drive the farmers away, but no injuries were reported.

Agha: Closure of crossings a message to Egypt

Khudari: The closure of Gaza crossings is a flagrant violation of the truce

[ 25/06/2008 - 07:43 PM ]

GAZA, (PIC)-- MP Jamal Al-Khudari, the head of the popular committee against the siege, stated that the Israeli decision to close the Gaza crossings is a flagrant violation of the truce and its items, and a step backwards, adding that the closure of crossings raised big question marks about the nature of the coming days.

MP Khudari deplored the Israeli occupation for assassinating two young men in cold blood in Nablus, calling on the Palestinian factions to seek a national consensus before taking any step to retaliate against Israeli violations in order to strengthen the internal front through taking a unified vision serving the higher national interests.

The lawmaker also called on the Palestinian factions to exercise prudence and restraint in order to suspend the aggression and break the siege on one and a half million people.

Thu, 26 Jun 2008 22:18:40

The Palestinian Islamic Jihad accuses Israel of violating Gaza ceasefire more than 15 times since it went into force officially a week ago.

The Israeli breaches include the hovering of Israeli reconnaissance buzzes, flying of F-16 jets over Gaza, shooting at fishermen in the sea and firing at Palestinian farmers in their lands, said the movement in the Gaza Strip Thursday.

The militants of the Islamic Jihad, who monitor the borders, have collected the truce breach information.

As Predicted, Israel is Out to Demolish The Tahdiyah

The Deputy Mustafa Barguti: The Assassinations in Nablus Aim to Demolish the Truce

 Tuesday June 24, 2008 13:01 by Laila Ewaiwi - IMEMC & Agencies

Ramallah- the General Secretary of the Palestinian National Initiative Dr. Mustafa Barghouti condemned the crime that the Israeli occupation committed in Nablus today 24-6-2008, which led to the killing of Iyad kanfar a fourth year student of Arts in Najah University and 23 year old Tariq Jom'a Abu Ghali.

Barghouti stated, "Israel's actions aim to demolish the truce agreement through going back to using the policy of assassinations and what they have done in Nablus presents a serious escalation."

He also added that Israel does not want to calm down the situation and is provoking the Palestinian people to take action so that they can hold it against them.

He clarified that the necessity of the truce includes the West Bank as well as the Gaza Strip; as well as the reason that any previous truce agreements did not work out was the Israeli policy of assassinations.

Quiet is muck

By Gideon Levy

A great disaster has suddenly come upon Israel: The cease-fire has gone into effect. Cease-fire, cease-Qassams, cease-assassiations, at least for now. This good, hopeful news was received in Israel dourly, gloomily, even with hostility. As usual, politicians, the military brass and pundits went hand in hand to market the cease-fire as a negative, threatening and disastrous development.

It is hard to believe: The outbreak of war is received here with a great deal more sympathy and understanding, not to say enthusiasm, than a cease-fire. When the warmongers get started, our unified tom-toms drum out only encouraging messages; when the all-clear is sounded, when people in Sderot can sleep soundly, even if only for a short time, we are all worried. That says something about society's sick face: Quiet is muck, war is the most important thing.

***

The very thought that has taken root among us, that calm is surrender, should be rethought. Is our strength only in assassinations? Are we headed only toward bloodshed? The opposition to extending the cease-fire to the West Bank also shows, again, that Israel only understands the language of force: It will agree to calm in the West Bank only after Qassams are fired from there as well. What message does that send the Palestinians? You want calm in the West Bank? Please fire Qassams at Kfar Sava, too.

So this about something much deeper than only a cease-fire. This is about Israel's image. The negative Israeli response to the cease-fire once again raises a deep suspicion: Perhaps Israel actually does not want peace? "

Truce Thursday as Israel Still Preparing for Gaza Op.

Hanan Awarekeh

17/06/2008 "The IDF will respect a cease-fire but is also getting ready for a large-scale military operation in the Gaza Strip," Israeli occupation army Chief of General Staff Lt.-Gen. Gabi Ashkenazi said on Tuesday during a session of the Knesset's Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee.

Ashkenazi also spoke of conditions in the West Bank, saying that the Palestinian Authority's policemen "are doing their work in the field of law and order, but not in the field of security."

Regarding Hezbollah, Brig. Gen. Yossi Baidatz, head of Military Intelligence's Research Branch, said that the group has built an infrastructure of underground tunnels despite Resolution 1701. "The only thing different today is that Hezbollah flags aren't hanging outside," he added.

In related news, the London-based Al-Hayat reported Tuesday that the cease-fire between Israel and Hamas will include three stages. Palestinian sources told the Arabic daily that the cease-fire will be in place for six months at first, and will later include the West Bank as well.

Will Gaza ever get a whiff of its offshore gas?

May 21, 2008

By Ines Bel Aiba - CAIRO (AFP)— Egyptian state media announced yesterday that Israel has agreed in principle to a truce in and around the Gaza Strip and quoted calls by a top official for Palestinian militants to seize an "historic opportunity."

The announcement came after a day of renewed bloodshed in the territory controlled by the Islamist Hamas movement since last June, with four people being killed in Israeli air raids, one of them a 13-year-old boy.

"Israeli leaders [have informed us] of their support for and understanding of the Egyptian proposals for a truce," Egypt's official Middle East News Agency quoted a senior official as saying without giving his name.

Israel says it is "ready to implement it as soon as Israeli leaders have been notified of the agreement of Palestinian organizations to parts of the truce proposals," the official added.

Cease-fire could take effect later this week

By Amos Harel, Avi Issacharoff and Barak Ravid

The cease-fire (tahdiyeh) being negotiated between Israel and the Palestinian groups in the Gaza Strip is expected to go into effect in a number of days, following developments at the end of meetings held by Defense Minister Ehud Barak in Sharm el-Sheikh yesterday with the Egyptian leadership.

The Egyptian Chief of Intelligence, General Omar Suleiman, who has been mediating between the parties, is scheduled to meet today with the heads of the Palestinian factions in the Strip.

Israel is waiting to learn from Suleiman whether the Palestinian groups, headed by Hamas, will agree to an unofficial deal on a cessation of terrorist activities in the strip, in return for an end to IDF attacks.

Heavy bombardment on Sadr city despite ceasefire

Baghdad - Voices of Iraq

Saturday , 10 /05 /2008 Time 9:44:56

Baghdad, May 10, (VOI) – Three large parts of Sadr city were subjected to heavy bombardment that was continuously carried out by U.S. helicopters, starting from Saturday 3:30 p.m. until now, despite the Iraqi government and representatives of the Sadr movement having signed an agreement to stop confrontations in the city.

Reporter of Aswat al-Iraq – Voices of Iraq – (VOI) said that airstrike operations covered the areas of Jameela, al-Gayiara, and al-Dakhil, but he could not contact medical sources to learn whether there were any casualties among Sadr city's residents.
Earlier on Saturday, the Sadr bloc's official spokesperson said that the bloc brokered a deal with the government of Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki to stop fighting in the troubled eastern Baghdad district of Sadr City, and end the crisis between the two sides.

Palestinians agree Israel truce

Ministers receive briefing on Gaza situation, terror alerts, Egyptian efforts to broker truce between Israel, Hamas. Final decision on lull deferred

Roni Sofer

Published: 04.30.08, 14:14 / Israel News

The Security Cabinet met Wednesday and discussed the Egyptian efforts to mediate a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas, as relayed after Former US President Jimmy Carter's visit to the region.

The majority of the cabinet ministers voiced their objection to the move, saying any ceasefire on Israel's part would only allow Hamas to regroup, rearm and recruit more operatives before it continues its attacks on Israel.

Prime Minister Ehud Olmert chose to refrain from making any definitive decision during the meeting, saying he would rather wait for the defense establishment to study the offer first.
