Jim Lobe: The origin of the Zionist, Neocon, Christian Right alliance (Part 1 of 2)
Pepe Escobar talks with Jim Lobe about this history of the Israel Lobby in the United States. From Christian Zionists to Neo-conservatives
Jim Lobe is the The Washington Bureau Chief of the international news agency Inter Press Service (IPS). Lobe has also written for Foreign Policy In Focus, Alternet, Tompaine.com, and was featured in BBC and ABC television documentaries about motivations for the US invasion of Iraq.
The public in the United States doesn't like what is going on and fully 81 percent feel that the country is moving in the wrong direction. But there doesn't seem to be much the public can do about it. It was widely felt that the 2006 election was a vote against the Iraq war, but the victorious Democrats failed to make any significant moves toward stopping the war or even halting, let alone reversing, Bush's attacks on constitutional government, and they have left the lame duck and discredited Decider in charge with a steady flow of additional funds to escalate the Iraq war.
Even more spectacular, Bush-Cheney seem headed toward a war against Iran, and the Democrats, while making a few chiding remarks, have actually given Bush-Cheney a quasi-legal basis for attacking Iran, with Pelosi removing from an Iraq War-funding bill a clause requiring Bush to obtain congressional sanction before starting a war on Iran, and the Democrats in the Senate voting unanimously for the Kyle-Lieberman bill declaring the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, a segment of the Iranian army, a "terrorist organization." There are many other indications of a possible U.S. attack on Iran in the next few months by the lame duck administration—the removal of Admiral William Fallon from head of Central Command and replacement by Bush lap-dog David Petraeus; the recent Petraeus-Crocker stress on Iran's alleged involvement in the Iraq war; the further bolstering of U.S. naval forces in the Persian Gulf; open warnings that military attack is one option under consideration (Ann Scott Tyson, "U.S. Weighing Readiness for Military Action Against Iran," Washington Post, April 26, 2008); congressional funding of more "bunker-busting" bombs and extra bombers to carry them—all without serious Democratic Party response or media and "international community" concern and counter-action. UN chief Ban Ki-Moon is very upset about China's repressive actions in Tibet, but says nothing about the possibility of yet another "supreme international crime" against Iran, the form of action that was the main focus of the UN Charter under which Ki-Moon supposedly operates.
Other difficulties abound. The wars in Afghanistan and Pakistan continue and grow with the United States and NATO determined to impose their version of "stability" on those distant lands. The Israelis continue to expand settlements and mercilessly grind down the Gaza strip population, with unremitting U.S. and "international community" support. The Western powers (mainly the United States, Britain, France, and Israel) all work toward improving their nuclear arms and only very selectively support the Non-Proliferatiion Treaty, accommodating the U.S. moves toward war with Iran; and weapons budgets and arms sales continue to grow. The economic growth of China and India and the move to ethanol-based fuel have helped push up the price of oil and food, threatening a major food shortage crisis across the globe. Income inequality continues to advance within and between countries under the regime of neoliberalism (i.e., advanced class warfare). No important steps have been taken to meet the challenge of global warming and, in fact, the coal industry and coal-fueled power plants are expanding in China and elsewhere. Finally, the debt- and speculation-based growth in the United States has produced a financial and economic crisis there and beyond that is not yet resolved, and the failure to add any new regulations to constrain the financial casino market bodes ill for future stability.

Joe Lieberman needs to do less YouTube watching and pay more attention to his job
American Jewish Committee Won't Touch Hagee on Holocaust; Silence from AIPAC, ADL
By Bruce Wilson Wed May 28, 2008
United States Senator Joseph Lieberman has called for banning "terrorist videos" from YouTube but Mr. Lieberman has failed to recognize that he has closely associated and allied himself with a group that has repeatedly and very publicly incited acts, against Israel, which the state of Israel considers acts of terrorism posing a security threat of the highest magnitude. Yesterday Journalist Max Blumenthal, on the Huffington post, elaborated on Lieberman's continuing association with a US organization inciting terrorist acts against Israel. ALSO SEE: Christian Zionism in 60 Seconds
At the July 16-18, 2007 Christians United For Israel (CUFI) yearly conference in Washington D.C., Senator Lieberman lavished praise on Christians United For Israel's founder, Texas megachurch evangelist Pastor John Hagee, likening Hagee to Moses, calling Hagee a "man of God", and stating that, like Moses, Hagee was the leader of a 'mighty multitude'.
But on July 18, 2007, at the nonprofit 501(c)(3) group's "A Night To Honor Israel" capstone event of it's three-day conference, CUFI Regional Director Billye Brim suggested that "God has a plan" for the Dome of The Rock, Islam's 3rd holiest site on Earth and the spot from which Muslims believe Moses ascended into Heaven. In the eschatolgical, or "End-Time" belief system held by most Christians United For Israel members, The Dome Of The Rock must be removed or destroyed to make way for the construction of a 3rd Jewish temple.

Hagee: God Sent Hitler. Lieberman: Hagee's Like Moses!
May 23, 2008
by Steven Newcomb / Indigenous Law Institute
In his May 15 speech before the Israeli Knesset, President George W. Bush invoked the Old Testament story of the chosen people and the Promised Land. Bush said that the establishment of Israel in 1948 ''was the redemption of an ancient promise given to Abraham, Moses and David - a homeland for the chosen people in Eretz Yisrael.''
Bush also spoke explicitly of an alliance and a friendship between Israel and the United States rooted in the Bible. The source of the link between the two countries, he said, ''is grounded in the shared spirit of our people, the bonds of the Book, the ties of the soul.'' Then, weaving a bit of American history into the mix, Bush told his audience: ''When William Bradford stepped off the Mayflower in 1620, he quoted the words of [the Hebrew prophet] Jeremiah 51:10: 'Come let us declare in Zion the word of God.'''
According to Bush, ''The founders of my country saw a new promised land and bestowed upon their towns names like Bethlehem and New Canaan. And in time, many Americans became passionate advocates for a Jewish state.'' American Indian lands, in other words, were viewed by the founders of the United States as a new Land of Canaan, a promised inheritance and everlasting possession.

Bush has failed to fulfill his divine mission, to secure the safety of Israel for all time. For a true believer in Christian-Zionism, it must be gnawing at his soul like some giant rat hollowing-out his insides. How can Jesus ever return if Bush can’t make Jerusalem safe enough for all Jews to return to? If Bush can’t clear the way for the rebuilding of Solomon’s Temple, then where will the messiah sit while he is destroying the earth and most of the Jews with it? (See: “Lobbying for Armageddon”)
http://www.israelenews.com/view.asp?ID=2
Bush has followed his obsession with making the Middle East safe for Israel down every conceivable twist and turn, looking for adequate justification to unleash Armageddon upon the region. He could not overcome Israeli civilian reluctance in 2006 to taste the rain of Hezbollah’s sweet retaliatory revenge of thousands of missiles. No amount of neocon machismo or camaraderie could convince the Israelis in 2006 that American bombers would back them up if Israel escalated its all-out fight to eliminate Hezbollah and Hamas into Syria and Iran.
Again, in the recent uproar in Lebanon, Bush the deliverer could not convince Israel to follow through with the planned air assault on Lebanon in the multi-stage plot to restart the war with Hezbollah, http://www.debka.com/article.php?aid=135

Ex-workers at Agriprocessors speak out

POSTVILLE, Iowa (JTA) -- As the country's largest kosher slaughterhouse scrambles to stay open after a federal raid, former workers at the plant -- many of them still fearful of retribution from government authorities -- have begun to tell their stories, revealing new details of conditions there.
Agents in the May 12 raid at the Agriprocessors plant in this small northeastern Iowa town arrested 389 illegal workers, among them 18 juveniles.

Bloom does his best to be fair to the Hasidim as he explores their hermetically sealed world. He notes his relief at the familiar speech rhythms, the questions upon questions. He accepts an invitation for a Shabbat stay with a Hasidic family, revels in the food, and prays with his hosts on command. But finally, Bloom is a liberal, not a fundamentalist: He's repelled by their intolerance, their insularity, their open delight in cheating "the goyim," and their manipulative arguments. He quotes one Hasid as saying proudly: "I am a racist... . Why haven't the Jews been extinguished after scores of attempts throughout history? That we are still here defies logic. There is only one answer. We are better and smarter. That's why!" Bloom's heart is with the Postville local who says: "It's not such a great religion if they don't want to be a part of the community, is it?"
More disturbing to Bloom was that the Lubavitchers were dishonorable in their business dealings. They'd buy something and not pay for it or pay or withhold payment for a long time.
"I get bills and throw them away," one bragged to him. "The more bills I get, the faster I throw them away. If they want to get paid that badly, they'll send me another notice and then another. When I'm ready to pay them, I pay them."

Today was not a good day for me. This afternoon, I went to a hamburger restaurant and saw that the majority of cars in the parking lot had pro-war bumper stickers proudly displayed. They included statements such as, "I Support the Troops" and "Freedom Isn’t Free." Almost all had the proclamation, "God Bless America."
Things got worse in the restaurant. At least six pre-teenage boys wore military camouflage clothing. Then, three women in their early 20s entered. They wore military camouflage shorts. Two adult males, who looked like dime-store mercenaries, displayed military camouflage t-shirts that overlapped their huge stomachs. Most of these people will watch the San Diego Padres baseball club on TV tomorrow as they play the Seattle Mariners in Seattle. At the beginning of the seventh inning, the song "God Bless America" will be played at the stadium. Most San Diegans will stop drinking their Coors beer and will stand in honor of God and country. Only for a couple of minutes though. That’s about how long they can go without swilling down their watered-down beer that they consider the world’s best.
When I got home, things deteriorated further. My Iraqi-American friend Wameeth came by and gave me an insert from a weekly events magazine. I looked at it, mimicked using it as a piece of toilet paper, and as I was about to throw it in the trash, I stopped. "What a subject for an article," I thought.
The front of the insert depicts a soldier kneeling (the picture included with this article). The back consists of the following prayer.
