Ending tussle, Google adds (lack of ) privacy link to home page

Some groups said that was a violation of California law. The company said then that it didn't think the link was necessary because its privacy policy was "readily accessible" to those looking for it. It could be found, among other places, on its About page, which was linked to from Google.com.

But Google quietly changed its stance and added a privacy link on Thursday, while privacy advocates were focusing their attention on another Google issue: a New York judge ordered the company to hand over information about YouTube videos and users to media giant Viacom as part of their copyright dispute.

--MORE--

More Israeli foot-dragging

More foot-dragging

The "Shalit affair" is being delayed for cynical ends, writes Khaled Amayreh in Ramallah

Hamas has accused Israel of "dragging its feet" and "showing little seriousness" about negotiating a prospective prisoner swap deal whereby Israel would free hundreds of Palestinian political and resistance prisoners in exchange for Hamas releasing an Israeli occupation army soldier captured by Palestinian fighters near Gaza two years ago.

Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert said he would like to speed up the negotiations with Hamas on a swap deal. Olmert was quoted as saying that he instructed all those who are involved in the negotiations with Hamas "to do what is necessary" so that the talks can progress as quickly as possible.

However, the Israeli government, especially the intelligence and security establishment, seems generally opposed to freeing hundreds of prominent Palestinian prisoners on the grounds that such a step would boost Hamas's popularity, mostly at the expense of the Ramallah-based Palestinian Authority (PA) regime.

--MORE--

Naomi Klein's "The Shock Doctrine" in the Israeli Context

Naomi Klein's "The Shock Doctrine" in the Israeli Context

On Thursday, the 26th of June, 2008, Shir Hever, economist with the Alternative Information Center (AIC) spoke with Canadian journalist, author and activist, Naomi Klein. Naomi is the author of No Logo: Taking Aim at the Brand Bullies and Fences and Windows: Dispatches from the Front Lines of the Globalization Debate and a frequent contributor to The Nation, In These Times, The Globe and Mail, and The Guardian.

Her most recent work is, The Shock Doctrine: The Rise of Disaster Capitalism (September 2007). In this book, she undertakes to show how “disaster capitalism,” which she defines as “orchestrated raids on the public sphere in the wake of catastrophic events, combined with the treatment of disasters as exciting market opportunities,” did not begin in the wake of September 11, 2001. Instead, its origins can be traced back fifty years, to the University of Chicago under Milton Friedman, which produced many of the leading neoconservative and neoliberal thinkers, whose influence is still profound in Washington today.

Shir spoke with Naomi about Israel’s role in the disaster capitalism phenomenon, the contradictions in Israeli society, which both profits and suffers from the burdens of being a fortress state in constant conflict, and on the discourse among Israeli economists about the role of peace vs. war in the Israeli economy.

--MORE--

Military action on Iran 'would destabilise Iraq'

Independent.co.uk
Military action 'would destabilise Iraq'

By Patrick Cockburn in Baghdad

Saturday, 5 July 2008

Iraq will be plunged into a new war if Israel or the US launches an attack on Iran, Iraqi leaders have warned. Iranian retaliation would take place in Iraq, said Dr Mahmoud Othman, the influential Iraqi MP.

The Iraqi government's main allies are the US and Iran, whose governments openly detest each other. The Iraqi government may be militarily dependent on the 140,000 US troops in the country, but its Shia and Kurdish leaders have long been allied to Iran. Iraqi leaders have to continually perform a balancing act in which they seek to avoid alienating either country.

The balancing act has become more difficult for Iraq since George Bush successfully requested $400m (£200m) from Congress last year to fund covert operations aimed at destabilising the Iranian leadership. Some of these operations are likely to be launched from Iraqi territory with the help of Iranian militants opposed to Tehran. The most effective of these opponent groups is the Mujahedin-e-Khalq (MEK), which enraged the Iraqi government by staging a conference last month at Camp Ashraf, north-east of Baghdad. It demanded the closure of the Iranian embassy and the expulsion of all Iranian agents in Iraq. "It was a huge meeting" said Dr Othman. "All the tribes and political leaders who are against Iran, but are also against the Iraqi government, were there." He said the anti-Iranian meeting could not have taken place without US permission.

--MORE--

For Political Expediency, Israel Defines Criminal Attack in Jerusalem as Terrorist Despite Evidence

Written by Sergio Yahni, Alternative Information Center (AIC)

Thursday, 03 July 2008

Jerusalem, 2 July 2008, Israeli rescue workers at the scene of an attack in which Hossam Dawyyat rammed a bulldozer into an Israeli commuter bus, cars and pedestrians on one of Jerusalem's busiest streets, killing at three people and wounding 70.

At midday on Wednesday, 2 July, Hossam Dawyyat, a Palestinian from the Sur Baher neighbourhood of Jerusalem, took a Caterpillar bulldozer used for the construction of the tram in central Jerusalem and ran amok, killing three Israelis and injuring more than 70 by crashing into passing cars and buses. Immediately the news reports began about a terrorist attack and the Galilee Freedom Battalions-the Martyrs of Imad Mughniyeh, a small resistance organization based in Jerusalem, claimed responsibility. This same organization claimed responsibility for the attack carried out against the Merkaz Harav yeshiva in March, earlier this year.

As time passed, the original and knee-jerk assumption that this incident in central Jerusalem was a terror attack began to weaken. According to Hassib Nashashibi, a field worker with the Association for Civil Rights in Israel (ACRI), Hossam Dawyyat was a drug addict and yesterday’s events were the terrible result of his personal problems. Dawyyat’s lawyer, Shimon Kokush, contends that according to Israeli law, there exists no legal basis for the categorization of Dawyyat’s actions as terror. His brother, Issam Dawyyat, noted that “my brother did not belong to any organization. He was not even a religious person. After terror attacks, he always used to say, 'What is this nonsense? Why do we need this?'

--MORE--

United by a Bulldozer

When a Palestinian runs over a Jew with a bulldozer he's a "terrorist." When a Jew runs over a Palestinian or an American protestor , the dead person is the "terrorist" ( I know this from reading the Associated Press style book, or was it the New York Times'?). ;-)

United by a Bulldozer - And I think to myself…

By Gilad Atzmon • Jul 4th, 2008

According to Haaretz, the Shin Bet security service, the (IDF) Military Advocate General, the Defence Minister Barak and the Prime Minister Olmert himself are all backing the demolition of terrorists’ homes.

Not much can be said; at last, Jews start to agree on something among themselves, not only do they agree, they even compete among themselves to be the most outspoken about it. They all want to lead the current Hebraic belligerence championship. Each of them tries to shape and reshape an authentic image of vengeance. One may have to admit: compassion is not an appreciated feature in the Jewish state.

In fact, it is almost amusing to read Olmert’s statements:

“This is an attack which came from within Israel into Israel,” says the observant Israeli PM. “It creates a string of scenarios we never thought we would have to deal with in the past.” He continues, and I do not know whether to laugh or to cry. Israel invests so much effort in racially based discrimination of its Palestinian citizens (whom they themselves tag as ‘Israeli Arabs’ rather than just fellow Israelis) yet, they somehow fail to predict that one day it all may spark out. I honestly find it hard to believe. However, here Mr. Olmert is almost getting me. “We,” he says, “have invested thousands in the construction of…” Stop right there…. At this stage I really need a break from this crap. I need to drink water. I obviously expect Olmert to follow the Israeli right wing blind mantra:

--MORE--
Spanish court examines war crimes case against Israeli military brass

Worldwide Activism, , June 28th, 2008

On 24 June 2008, the Palestinian Centre for Human Rights (PCHR) filed a lawsuit at the National Court of Spain, the highest Spanish judicial council, against seven former senior Israeli military officials. These include former Defence Minister Benjamin Ben-Eliezer, his former military advisor, Michael Herzog, former Israeli Army Chief of Staff Moshe Ya’alon and Dan Halutz, former Commander of the Israeli Air Force.

All of them were involved in the planning and execution of the “targeted assassination” of Salah Shehada, commander of the armed wing of Hamas, in Gaza city in July 2002. The Occupation dropped a 500 kg bomb on his house killing him and seventeen others, including his wife, his daughter, his guard, eight children (including a 2-month infant), two elderly men, and two women. In addition, seventy-seven other people were injured, eleven houses were completely destroyed and thirty-two houses damaged.

This lawsuit the Spanish National Court is now examining has been made possible by the cooperation of PCHR, a series of experienced and well known human rights lawyers and Palestinian and Spanish solidarity organizations (including the Arab Cause Solidarity Committee and the Al-Quds Association for Solidarity with People in Arab Countries).

--MORE--

Resolutions on Iran amount to declaration of war

Resolutions amount to declaration of war

By Maya Schenwar and Matt Renner

Friday, 07.04.2008, 11:32pm

Non-binding resolutions in the U.S. House of Representatives and Senate to demand that President Bush impose "stringent inspection requirements" on trade with Iran — language that leaves the door open for a military blockade — will likely come to a vote this week or next, according to sources close to Congressional leadership. The House legislation, H.Con.Res.362, which is paralleled by a similar Senate bill, has gained bipartisan support rapidly, with more co-sponsors signing on by the day. Once it hits the floor, it's bound to "pass like a hot knife through butter," a staffer in House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's office told Chelsea Mozen of the nonprofit Just Foreign Policy.

Trita Parsi, co-founder and president of the National Iranian American Council (NIAC), concurred, saying passage may happen as early as Tuesday.

"This bill will likely be put on the floor under suspension — meaning that it will pass without even a vote," Parsi told Truthout.

--MORE--

First there is a smear, a lie, and then a none too subtle suggestion

It is annoying to receive unambiguous death threats and then find no way to identify the person, have their email privileges revoked, let alone to prosecute the person. Thus, queries to the ISP are referred to the police, and these in turn will send the query back to the ISP. The situation is worse if the threatened author resides overseas. A Palestinian writer, a resident of the Occupied Territories, recently received several serious email death threats (including his home address), and upon complaining to the US-based ISP, he received a suggestion that the matter should be followed up with the local authority. The address given to him was an Israeli agency.

Smear Mongers

by PAUL de ROOIJ

The shockwaves of 9-11 have had a chilling effect on civil liberties in the form of the Patriot Act and the repressive measures taken by a plethora of government agencies. One must add to this the fallout from the conflict between Palestinians and Israelis, and it becomes evident that even universities are not immune from the chill. Now freedom of speech, academic freedom and democracy itself are all at risk--the values that America so greatly cherishes have been greatly diminished.

Case in point. Last July Prof. Shahid Alam of Northeastern Univ. in Boston wrote an eloquent article calling for an academic boycott of Israeli academic institutions; it appeared in both CounterPunch and Al Ahram . The article gave an overview of the Palestinian condition, a criticism of the "West" in allowing this situation to continue, and then a carefully reasoned argument why academics and students should engage in the time honored peaceful protest, an academic boycott of Israeli institutions. When Professor Alam invited some academics to consider joining the academic boycott against Israel, he said, "one wrote back saying how disappointed he was that I should support this boycott, since it was destructive. I felt called upon to explain why I thought the boycott was morally justified." Such a boycott has been applied before in the case of South Africa to end apartheid, and it proved to be effective. Even Israeli academics like Prof. Illan Pappe have called for such a measure--stating that there must be consequences to the Israeli oppression and dispossession of the native population.

One seldom thinks about the consequences for someone in writing or expressing their views. We take it for granted that there is freedom of speech, and that a writer need not fear for their life, safety or livelihood. In the case of Prof. Alam, a smear campaign was set in full swing after the publication in Al Ahram. The first salvo was an article in the Jerusalem Post , a newspaper owned by Conrad Black , an ardent Zionist, and owner of the Daily Telegraph of London. The JP article completely altered the thrust of Prof. Alam's argument; the first sentence read: "An economics professor at Boston's Northeastern University has justified Palestinian terrorist attacks against Israel." The thrust of his article, a call for a boycott, a peaceful means to protest, was distorted into a support for violence and the suicide bombers. The article ended with a reference to a course Prof. Alam will teach in the fall. So first there is a smear, a lie, and then a none too subtle suggestion to some readers of a way that Prof. Alam could be harassed.

--MORE--

US Okayed South Korean War Massacres

US Wavered Over S. Korean Executions

July 05, 2008

Associated Press

EDITOR'S NOTE - On May 19, The Associated Press reported on the hidden history of mass executions by South Korea early in the Korean War. The following report looks in depth at the U.S. connection.

SEOUL, South Korea - The American colonel, troubled by what he was hearing, tried to stall at first. But the declassified record shows he finally told his South Korean counterpart it "would be permitted" to machine-gun 3,500 political prisoners, to keep them from joining approaching enemy forces.

In the early days of the Korean War, other American officers observed, photographed and confidentially reported on such wholesale executions by their South Korean ally, a secretive slaughter believed to have killed 100,000 or more leftists and supposed sympathizers, usually without charge or trial, in a few weeks in mid-1950.

--MORE--
Zionism convert turning Google into just another predatory corporation

July 5, 2008

Talking Business

On Day Care, Google Makes a Rare Fumble

By JOE NOCERA

Two months ago, Google held a series of secret focus groups with employees who have children in Google’s day care facilities. The purpose was to gauge their reaction to the company’s plan to raise the amount it charged for in-house day care by 75 percent.

Parents who had been paying $1,425 a month for infant care would see their costs rise to nearly $2,500 — well above the market rate. For parents with toddlers and preschoolers, who were charged less, the price increases were equally eye-popping. Under the new plan, parents with two kids in Google day care would most likely see their annual day care bill grow to more than $57,000 from around $33,000.

At the first of the three focus groups, parents wept openly. As word leaked out about the company’s plan, the Google parents began to fight back. They came up with ideas to save money, used the company’s T.G.I.F. sessions — a weekly meeting for anyone who wanted to ask questions of Google’s top executives — to plead their case, and conducted surveys showing that most parents with children in Google day care would have to leave Google’s facilities and find less expensive child care.

--MORE--
FBI Agents could soon be allowed to investigate Americans without any evidence of wrongdoing

Updated: July 4, 2008 06:56 PM MDT

FBI Could Investigate You

FBI Agents could soon be allowed to investigate Americans without any evidence of wrongdoing, according to the Justice Department.

Justice Department officials say FBI Agents would rely on a terrorist profile that could single out Muslims, Arabs or other racial groups. Randall County District Attorney James Farren says this announcement by the Justice Department really doesn't change anything in relation to the personal rights of citizens.

Traditionally the FBI has been more restrictive than other agencies. All this does is put them on a level playing field with other agencies. Some of the other factors that could make someone the subject of an investigation... Recent travel to places known for terrorist activity, access to weapons or military training.

--MORE--

Groups claim Justice Dept bypassing warrants to obtain real-time tracking information on US citizens

DOJ Sued Over Cell Phone Tracking Practices

By Roy Mark

2008-07-02

Civil liberties groups claim the Justice Department is bypassing warrants to obtain real-time tracking information on U.S. citizens.

The ACLU and Electronic Freedom Foundation moved July 1 to force the Department of Justice to turn over records related to the government's program of using cell phones as tracking devices. The groups claim the public has a right to know the extent of the government's use of the technique.

In documents filed in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia, the ACLU and EFF are seeking documents, memos and guides issued by the DOJ for tracking individuals through the use of their cell phones. The civil liberties groups also want to know the number of times the government has applied for cell phone location information without establishing probable cause and how many times it has been granted.

--MORE--

Driver arrested for Drunk Driving at 0.0

DWI Arrest at 0.0

Saturday, July 5th, 2008

Woman was a designated driver. Didn’t have a drop to drink all night. She refused a roadside sobriety test because . . . well, because they’re utter bullshit (and unlike a blood or breath test, you’re allowed to refuse the roadside test). I’m sure it’s pure coincidence that her husband, who was in the car, is a DWI defense attorney, and had just beaten the cop in question in court.

In any case, after her arrest and incarceration, prosecutors were forced to quietly drop the charges when her blood test came back 0.0. Now, ask yourself how the officer writes the following about a stone sober woman:

It’s interesting to read the affidavit that Officer Gonzalez wrote that night about Heather Squires, intending to ask the Motor Vehicles Division of ADOT to yank her license. (He never mailed it — possibly because of the blood-test results.)

--MORE--

Bilderberg strikes again: Hackers, the Net, blondes, and the war on freedom

Bilderberg strikes again: Hackers, the Net, blondes, and the European war on freedom

June 27, 2008

by Stefan Fobes

Earlier this week, in my analysis of Bilderberg 2008 and what it held for the world this year, I pondered on whether there would be Al-CIAda hackers let loose, as cyberterrorism was being discussed this time. And yesterday, some hackers messed around and made the official sites of the organizations overseeing the web’s key routing infrastructure and domain name regulation systems point to a site displaying this message: “You think that you control the domains but you don’t! Everybody knows wrong. We control the domains including ICANN! Don’t you believe us?”

Did a ten year old write that? Oh…oh….uh….you buh…believe us don’t you? This is exactly like the 9/11 “cellphone” call from Flight 93 where someone called passenger Mark Bingham’s mother and said, hi this is Mark Bingham, and then when asked by Bingham’s mother who the guys were that they said had a bomb on the plane, they asked, You believe me, don’t you? Voice cloning technology has long ago been perfected by governments. Here’s a bit from the Washington Post:

“Gentlemen! We have called you together to inform you that we are going to overthrow the United States government.” So begins a statement being delivered by Gen. Carl W. Steiner, former Commander-in-chief, U.S. Special Operations Command.

--MORE--

GOP Rep: Bush "Should Stay Home" During Republican Convention

July 5, 2008

White House Memo

Tiptoeing on Bush and Convention

By SHERYL GAY STOLBERG

WASHINGTON — What if your family was planning a big end-of-summer bash (a Grand Old Party, you might call it) but preferred that you not be seen — or heard?

That is the question hanging over President Bush, with eight weeks to go until Republicans gather in St. Paul to nominate Senator John McCain as his successor. Convention planners, the White House and the McCain campaign are wrestling with how to choreograph a proper send-off for Mr. Bush — sure, his poll numbers are in the tank, but he is still the party leader and president of the United States — while hustling him out the door in time for Mr. McCain to look like his own man.

“It’s a very delicate situation,” said Brian Jones, a former communications director for Mr. McCain’s campaign who also was a top communications strategist during Mr. Bush’s 2004 run for re-election. “Even though the president is the president, this is going to be John McCain’s convention, and you want it to be about John McCain and what his presidency would be.”

--MORE--
